This paper examines autonomy as a compromise legal instrument for realizing the right of peoples to self-determination without violating the principle of a state’s territorial integrity. The paper analyzes the legal nature and types of autonomous entities (personal, corporate, territorial) and identifies four key historical prerequisites for their formation in global practice. Drawing on international experience (Spain, Finland, the United Kingdom, etc.), the paper highlights both the positive effects of autonomy on the preservation of cultural identity and the risks of separatist sentiments arising. Particular attention is paid to the prospects for applying models of autonomy in Ukraine (specifically in the context of preparations for the de-occupation of Crimea and the protection of the rights of indigenous peoples), as well as to maintaining a balance between unitary state structure, the expansion of local self-government, and national security, taking into account the legal positions of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and international standards.
