The paper examines the artistic representation of environmental catastrophes in Margaret Atwood's novel "Oryx and Crake" through the lens of ecocritical methodology. The specificity of the author's interpretation of the interconnections between technological progress, corporate capitalism, environmental degradation, and posthumanist transformations of humanity is analyzed. The research investigates how Atwood constructs a dystopian vision of ecological collapse through narrative techniques, symbolism, and character development, revealing the ethical implications of unchecked scientific experimentation and corporate exploitation of natural resources.
During the writing of the work, the theoretical foundations of the concept of environmental catastrophe were defined, ecocriticism was characterized as a scientific approach to literature with particular attention to its evolution and methodological frameworks, Margaret Atwood's place in the tradition of eco-dystopia was analyzed in the context of contemporary speculative fiction, the artistic depiction of the conflict between nature and technoculture was investigated through textual analysis, artistic means of depicting environmental collapse were identified including metaphor, imagery, and narrative structure, and characters were analyzed as bearers of different ideological positions regarding nature and science, examining how their interactions reflect broader societal tensions between environmental preservation and technological advancement.
The study demonstrates how "Oryx and Crake" serves as both a cautionary tale and a profound meditation on humanity's relationship with the natural world in an age of biotechnological innovation and ecological crisis.
